What do we know about Chinese Breakfast?

As a traditional Chinese culture, food means a lot for Chinese people. Old generations often ask others “Ni Chi le ma?” (Did you eat?) as a greeting, even now it is a popular sentence to show people that you care about them.


Why Chinese take food seriously? Because China = Chi (Eat) na = Eat na~

Talking about the difference in food cultures between China and western countries, there is a proverb in Chinese saying, “Eat well for breakfast, full for lunch, less for dinner”. Instead of bread or coffee, Chinese people take breakfast the most serious among the meals in a day. Are you wondering what Chinese people usually have for breakfast?


 

Porridge/Congee


There are many styles of breakfast porridge, this is a sweet porridge made with rice, adzuki beans (red beans), peanuts, corn kernels, kidney beans, brown sugar, etc. You could also add Chinese date and wolfberry into the porridge.

Of course, porridge with vegetables and meat is also a good choice for breakfast. Having a warm and soft porridge in the morning will warm up your stomach and brain to start the new day.



Deep-fried doll sticks & soy milk / jellied bean curd



The fried Youtiao is crispy outside and tender inside, you could match it with a bowl of warm soy milk or jellied bean curd like in the photo. In the north of China, the jellied bean curd is salty while in the south it is sweet, but they all taste good.



Steamed stuffed buns


There are many types of buns in China, the most popular type is this steamed stuffed bun, because it is soft, juicy, and warm, it could be filled with meat or vegetables. It is easy to take away, and it will satisfy your fancy about a tasty breakfast.



Jianbing


As one of the most popular breakfasts for Chinese people, it has a good reason. Jianbing is a thin pancake with egg on it, then rolled with lettuce, chopped scallions, and cilantro, sausage, a fried dough stick, or a crispy fried flatbread, seasoned with chili sauce. The wrap is soft and chewy while the filling is crunchy, such a special taste makes Jianbing start to be popular in many other countries.



Wontons


Different from dumplings, wontons’ soup is fresh and luscious. Wontons are stuffed with seasoned smashed beef or pork, cooked in boiling water then paired with the fragrant soup. This is how happiness is realized.



Beef flavored noodles


The soup is made with beef, anise, and other seasonings, then matched with chewy noodles, beef slices, and green cole. This is a bowl of noodles called Yummy.


 

To have a tasty breakfast, Chinese people have been working hard on it. Even now I am living abroad, it is hard to get such a traditional Chinese style breakfast, I am trying to make my breakfast warm and nutritious. I also hope that what wakes you up in the morning is not the pressure, but the desire for a delicious breakfast.
